One is cool, then warms; the other stays the same temperature no matter how long it's held. A child's hands notice this long before their mind has words for it - and what the hand notices, the mind eventually learns to expect from the world.
This is the quiet argument underneath the wooden‑versus‑plastic question. It is rarely really about safety data sheets or landfill statistics, though both matter. It is about what an object teaches simply by being touched, thousands of times, during the years when touch is how a child learns.

What the material is actually teaching
A toy is never just an object a child plays with. It is a small, repeated lesson in cause and effect, weight and texture, and what happens when something is dropped, thrown, or chewed. Plastic and wood teach different lessons.
Solid hardwoods - beech, maple, birch - finished with non‑toxic, water‑based paints or beeswax, don't just feel different; they behave differently under a child's hand. They are naturally resistant to bacteria, don't splinter into sharp fragments the way brittle plastics can crack, and their surface doesn't change no matter how many times it's handled.
Lower‑grade plastics tell a less predictable story. Some contain BPA, PVC, phthalates, or synthetic dyes, and even toys labelled "safe" can degrade with sun and heat exposure, shedding microplastics a child may never see but will still mouth, touch, and breathe in.
What a child's hands are building
From the outside, a child stacking blocks looks like simple amusement. From the inside, it is a continuous stream of small sensory judgements - how much force to use, how a shape balances, what happens when a tower leans too far - that are quietly building the architecture of perception and thought.
Sensory Discrimination
Wood offers a child something plastic largely can't: variation. No two grains are identical, no two pieces are exactly the same weight, and the surface changes subtly with light and touch. This variation is not a flaw - it is the raw material of discrimination, the skill of noticing fine differences between similar things. A child sorting wooden shapes is training the same perceptual muscle they'll later use to tell letters apart, or notice when something in a room has changed.
Plastic, by design, eliminates this variation. Every piece from the mould is identical to the last. There is nothing wrong with uniformity in itself, but a childhood built entirely on identical, frictionless objects offers fewer opportunities to practise noticing.
Cause and Effect
A wooden block dropped on a hard floor makes a specific, real sound, and behaves according to consistent physical rules - it doesn't bounce unpredictably, it doesn't crack, it settles. A child who stacks, knocks down, and stacks again is running the same experiment dozens of times a day, refining a private theory of gravity, balance, and consequence.
Battery‑powered plastic toys often short‑circuit this process. When a toy lights up or sings in response to any touch - hard, soft, accidental, deliberate - the connection between the child's action and the object's response becomes vague. The toy is reacting, not responding, and the child has less reason to refine what they did to cause it.
The Montessori Dimension
A plain set of wooden blocks has no fixed identity. It becomes a tower, then a bridge, then a wall, then a train - whatever the child needs it to be that afternoon. This open-endedness is where imagination actually gets exercised: the child supplies the meaning, rather than receiving it pre-packaged from the object.
Many plastic toys are built with a single, narrow use in mind - a specific character, a specific sound, a specific "correct" way to play. That's not a moral failing, but it does mean the toy is doing the imagining on the child's behalf, leaving less room for the child to do it themselves.
On choosing the right toy
There is no single certification that guarantees a good toy, but a few checks narrow the field considerably. Look for solid wood rather than "wood composite" or MDF, which can involve synthetic adhesives. Check the finish - water-based paint, plant oil, or beeswax rather than lacquer or varnish that a teething toddler shouldn't be mouthing. And look for independent safety certification: CE marking and compliance with EN 71 (the European toy safety standard) at minimum, with FSC certification as a further signal that the wood itself was responsibly sourced.
None of this needs to be complicated. A toy that feels genuinely solid, smells of nothing but wood, and comes from a maker willing to name its materials is usually a safe bet.
What to expect - and what not to expect
Neither material is without trade-offs, and a Montessori household doesn't need to be a plastic-free one to be a thoughtful one. But for the pieces a child returns to daily - the blocks, the sorting toys, the furniture they climb on and sit at - the material is doing more developmental work than it gets credit for.
Sustainability tips the scale further toward wood. Sustainably sourced, FSC‑certified wood is renewable and biodegradable, and a well‑made piece can be sanded, repaired, and passed down rather than replaced. Plastic, derived from fossil fuels, doesn't biodegrade, breaks more readily under rough play, and is rarely recyclable in practice once it's a toy rather than packaging.
Durability follows the same pattern. A wooden toy that survives one sibling's toddler years is very often still sound for the next. Plastic tends to crack, scratch, and fade - not from misuse, but simply from being played with the way children play.
Cost is the one place plastic wins on paper. Wooden toys ask for more upfront - often two to three times the price of a plastic equivalent. But a single well-made wooden piece frequently outlasts, and outperforms, several cheaper plastic replacements bought in succession, which narrows the gap considerably over a childhood, and closes it further still if the piece is later resold or handed down.
